Pepi Valderrama‘s next question prompt:
Have you ever created a spread? Do you think it’s effective?
I’ve never created a spread for Lenormand, just for Tarot. Right now, I’m too busy learning the traditional progression of spreads up to the Grand Tableau. I suppose after I’ve finished learning the very basics of the GT, I could think about creating a spread, kinda, but Lenormand is more about linguistic structure and the question. I know there are “positions” or “houses” in the GT, but I haven’t seen them uniquely identified in smaller spreads, as in a context for the card (about home, or health, or love, etc.). The cards are about these things in their meanings.
The different draws can have positions for the cards, but they are generic and just about how the cards relate to each other to make a “sentence” or “phrase” or in longer spreads, a story. Like for a three-card spread, one card can be the subject/object and the other two adjectives, or they can be read as subject-verb-object even. Again, the context or “theme” seems to be in the card’s meaning and in the question.
The main thing a spread seems to do is to restrict or expand the time frame for the reading. Three cards for a daily, five for a week or so, 3X3 square for one-to-three months, and the Grand Tableau for longer, although as I’m learning with the GT, it’s not so much about the whole reading playing out over time, necessarily, as it is about the spectrum of the person’s influences and by position how far or near they are in time and space.
I’ll use a three-card draw as a simple example for a daily time frame and really mundane meanings. Usually if it’s only for a day, it’s also “little stuff.” Let’s ask the Lenormand what my prospects are financially for the next 24 hours (the subject is uppermost because my editing biz is in cash flow shortage at the moment)?
Here in my White Owl deck, we have Ring-Mice-Whip. Doesn’t look real great, but it’s not directly about money. Looks like there might be a misunderstanding or conflict of interest (Whip) causing a problem (Mice) with one of my client contracts (Ring). Some of my profit may be lost because expectations are mismatched in the contract. I will try to remember to update you all with results tomorrow.
