Happy Spring! Up here in the Pacific Northwest of the USA, the daffodils are in bloom, along with all sorts of fruit trees in pink and white. Definitely a burst of color between the rains. Birds are on the move and migratory chirps are now interspersed with the local geese’s daily calls as they go back and forth between mountains and seashore. Definite sense of newness/renewal; let’s get out of hibernation and get going!
Our wonderful and super-smart wrangler for this hop, Joy Vernon, gave us three Tarot/astrological decanate associations and a call to ritual, if we so chose. I liked the focus on the planets in the constellation of Aries and the focus on the Wands suit (the wake-up-and-get-on-an-adventure suit), but the decanate details (I think it’s a set of divisions by ten degrees (decan = ten) for the time and place in the sky where a planet influences the sign?) are above my astrology pay grade.
I also tend to short-circuit magical rituals by just sending out energy, which isn’t near as interesting as some other folks on the hop who use ritual in their esoteric and spiritual practices all the time. So, I shall leave magical rituals to the experts. 🙂
I took my own version of Joy’s third “freelance option” for the hop and twisted it to my own stream of consciousness purpose.
Aries
Perfect for the energy of spring, this sign. My Piscean sun sign self sees Aries as a rather disruptive little ram, poking his head into everything just to try it out, running from one hilltop to another, being generally impulsive. The flowers also feel that way. It could be below freezing again before they are safely established, but the Sun says it’s spring, so they bloom and grow heedlessly. Also, the spring storms come through like a ram charging his enemy during mating season. Lots of energy, lots. Wait, Aries sounds like….the Knight of Wands! Impulsive, constantly moving, ready for a fight, looking for that next great social or sexual experience.
Mars in Aries
Mars as ruler of Aries. Totally appropriate! More knight-off-to-battle energy, more passion and lack of discipline. Completely Wandsy! Plus, Mars is the red planet, and red is a major theme color for Wands cards. Joy tells us that this decan of Aries is associated with the Two of Wands. A bit more balanced than I would have expected of Mars, but also representing a jumping-off point and taking that first risk of sending out your idea/creation/resources to see if you can attain victory. The Mibramig Two of Wands fellow even has some resemblance to our Aries ram, although I would assume pronghorn antelope in this case.
Sun in Aries
In the second decan of Aries, the Sun comes out from the swirling spring storm clouds and shines down on the Three of Wands. Nothing like a bit of sunshine to show that your ships are coming in over the horizon and to make sure that offloading will be fast and easy! You’ve created your success and now you can bask in it.
Venus in Aries
Mars always had the hots for Venus, so this figures. And Venus is the only one who can calm down the god of war, if only temporarily. So in the last decan of Aries, our ram finally comes around to his sweet place to rest in the loving attention of his Venus. All that Aries/Wand energy is nicely mixed into a Four of Wands dance to celebrate the planting of passion into the earth.
The End. Almost.
This little Mars/Sun/Venus in Aries story makes me wonder if there’s a cool spread in these symbols beyond the association with the Wands cards. Let’s see…
Spring Creation Spread
Let’s ask questions of the archetypes and see what shows up. Lay out four cards in an arc, like this one based on the main stars of the Aries constellation. (Note: The labels do NOT represent star or planet names in our solar system—I’m just using the images to represent places in the spread):
Now, you can just shuffle your Wands cards and Majors if you want to keep this focused just on a creative project, or use the whole deck and see what comes up. Your questions for the positions:
For Aries: How can I use gather all the elements to ensure a spectacular launch for this project?
For Mars: Where can I find the raw energy to get this project moving?
For the Sun: How can I best make this effort visible to folks who would benefit?
For Venus: How should I arrange my celebration of my creation to maximize the fun?
Let me know how this turns out for you should you choose to try it. Thanks for stopping by to share the high-powered energy of Aries and don’t forget to continue your hop either to my successor, Shada or if you are a contrarian and taking the path backwards, on to my predecessor, Karen.

Loved it!! Will be using that spread–thank you!
M Juniper Tarot
I like your astro associations with the cards + astro spread. Making questions of planets and signs is sometimes opposite to what astrology does (tells you what the planets/signs mean). It’s nice to run across astro spreads like this. Thank you for sharing this one…I’ll give a go this week!
Boglarka
Aaaw, I love the idea of Mars finding Venus – and calming down 🙂 – in 4 of Wands! 🙂 Thank you for this great post, Joanne!

Thanks, Boglarka!

I never thought of the idea that my questions to the planets was unusual. Neat, M. Juniper!

My wife and had a Wiccan handfasting when we got married, and as part of the ritual she and chose a single Tarot card at random from a shuffled deck to mark the beginning of our marriage. What came out but the Knight of Clubs? It’s been a very Knight-of-Clubs kind of marriage, lol

The Mibramig deck looks like an interesting Tarot deck.

I bought the Mibramig solely because it has a Happy Squirrel card…

Morgan, yes, I really need to rethink and get this deck. The illustrations are so straightforward and yet unique with the use of the animal images. I actually got the image off the internet somewhere and don’t have the deck yet.

Thanks for the spread Joanne. I’ve just tried it and it gave me a wry smile when the 9 of Wands came out for Mars… 😀
